Sips
(smoothies + juices + more)
We've entered what I like to call hibernation preparation season. Which also means it's the season for warm, cozy drinks, like today's latte! With an herbal tea base and a simple topping of frothy maple-sweetened milk, this drink is never more than five minutes away from sipping.
I wanted to share something simple and refreshing this week because I'm still very much in summer-cooking mode. This ginger-spiked coconut water is a hydrating afternoon pick-me-up that I think you'll love!
It's spring and the sun is out in Madrid! I've heard even Madrid is not immune to cool and rainy spring days. But for now it's warm, and I'm celebrating with a smoothie! Today I have for you an energizing, mood-boosting, creamy and very blueberry smoothie.
The New Year; it can be motivating and exciting, but if you’re like me, you might also feel anxious returning to the reality of normal routine after a period of relaxed, indulgent days. It feels like there’s no choice but to leave the comforts of the season behind in order to be productive and balanced again – as if we can’t have both at once. But this all-or-nothing mentality is not fair logic.
If you've followed for a while you know my love for persimmons. Autumn for me is not just Hibernation Preparation Season, but also Persimmon Season. I wait all year for these guys to show up. They're finally here and making their debut in this smoothie.
When green smoothies are made mindfully, erring on the side of less is more, and sugar content is kept down they can provide a naturally energizing boost to your day. But in our smoothie-crazed society it's easy to overcomplicate the recipe, adding more ingredients and more complex combinations than we would otherwise eat on a plate in whole food form.
My final recipe to wrap-up this month's cleansing series is more of a cleansing ritual than a proper recipe. But I wanted to share it with you and offer a few variations because I know I'm not the only person who enjoys lemon water. Lemon ginger tea (or some variation of it) is my morning elixir several times a week.
This is a no-cook breakfast porridge. I'll keep it simple and say that it's a lifesaver of a breakfast. Whether you're bored of your breakfast routine, you've just run out of granola midweek and have nothing fresh in the house, you have an early start to work and need something made-ahead to grab and go, or you've been feeling sluggish and heavy from a weekend of indulgences (or a month of indulgences), this is what will save you.
This cool sweet/tart green smoothie makes the most of tangy goat’s milk kefir (or coconut kefir) by balancing it with the sweet and uniquely tropical, fruity flavor of pineapple. I add spinach and flax seeds for some greens and fiber. And peanut butter and hemp seeds give it richness and staying power.
